A Name Fenerbahce Already Knew
Tatavla Sport flagged Johnny Juzang as a profile fit for Fenerbahce a year before the club signed him. The fit has moved off the whiteboard. The job now is to define his role inside the 2026-27 roster and to work out how much of Tarik Biberovic’s workload he can carry now that Biberovic has left for the Dallas Mavericks.
Fenerbahce have signed a shooter who spent the early years of his career hunting for the ecosystem that would let his best skill breathe. A defined job and a finished EuroLeague star are two different things.
UCLA, the NBA Fringe, and the Search for a System
Juzang’s UCLA Final Four run, where he averaged 22.8 points per game, put him in front of NBA scouts. Utah gave him 19.8 minutes a night, which is real rotation time, and he shot 37.5 percent from three in that role. A short Minnesota stint followed. The defined job did not come with it. He was a player stuck at the end of an NBA rotation and unable to write his own job description.
Zenit changed the picture. European basketball keeps the ball and the players around it in motion, and Juzang stopped fighting the structure around him. Zenit built the structure around him instead. That is the cleanest recent example of a system lifting a player.
The Zenit Breakout
Seventeen VTB League games produced 25.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. The scoring volume draws the attention. The efficiency sitting next to it is the harder thing to find in a European game built on tight spacing and help-heavy defense.
He put up 6.1 three-point attempts per game, a heavy load by EuroLeague-adjacent standards, and made between 42.5 and 45.6 percent of them. The advanced numbers hold up: 63 percent true shooting, 61.9 percent effective field goal percentage, and a 24.9 percent usage rate that made him the engine of the Zenit offense. Players who carry that much of the ball tend to see their turnover rate climb. Juzang’s sat at 14.49 percent. His 1.32 points per shot explains where the discipline comes from.
The Release
His catch-and-shoot footwork belongs on a teaching tape. His hips drop and his knees bend before the pass arrives, and his feet stay locked to the floor. He is pre-loaded, and the ball meets hands that are already rising.
The 2.01-metre, 103-kilogram frame does the rest. He releases from a height that leaves a defender sprinting into the closeout reaching elbow level at best. The upper body holds its shape through pressure, through a tight game, through tired legs. The mechanics do not break.
The Space Biberovic Leaves Behind
Biberovic shot above 50 percent from three and 95.1 percent from the free-throw line between 2023 and 2025 while producing 12.1 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. The numbers understate his value. He was a two-way, low-maintenance system player, the most reliable cog in Saras’s machine, and his presence pulled help defenders toward him even when he never touched the ball. His departure changed the geometry of the floor, and Fenerbahce have to rebuild that space.
Juzang does not copy the profile. Reports describe a player far less comfortable with physical contact, someone who slips contact where Biberovic took the hit. His offensive package goes deeper. He can create his own shot, he has a mid-range game, and he can attack a hard closeout and finish with a floater. Stand-still corner shooting is one item on the list, not the whole list.
Where He Fits in Saras’s Offense
That range of skills maps onto Sarunas Jasikevicius’s movement-shooting philosophy. Stagger and pin-down sets, with bigs screening away from the ball to spring a shooter, are the actions Juzang is built for. He should live on the weak side as a catch-and-shoot spacer, and two or three makes in a row can push him into heat-check mode, closing a game with shot-making that defies the scouting report.
The Defensive Risk
Lateral quickness is the weak point in the construction. His centre of gravity sits too high in his defensive stance and he does not sit down into his legs, so explosive guards turn the corner on him. Add the habit of avoiding contact and you get a defender who does not draw fouls and does not rebound his position the way Biberovic did.
The 2026-27 roster can hide some of it. Baldwin, Larkin and THD collapse the paint off the dribble, and while they bend the defense inward, Juzang can camp on the weak side and punish the rotation. The synergy works on one condition.
Decision-Making Decides the Role
In Saras’s system the decision comes first. If a hard closeout arrives and Juzang puts his head down to hunt a contested shot, he will sit down next to the coach. The extra pass to the open corner or to the rolling big has to arrive as a reflex.
His ball security suggests he can handle that demand. A 14.49 percent turnover rate on 24.9 percent usage is the line of a decision-maker. EuroLeague physicality is a different animal to the VTB League, and the discipline has to survive the step up.
The Test
EuroLeague physicality will either disrupt Juzang’s rhythm or hand him the stage. If it hands him the stage, he becomes the case study that pushes Europe from a B plan to an A plan for squeezed American guards. That is where the stakes of this signing sit.
