    What actually happened

This was not a shooting slump story. It was a possession-quality story. Real Madrid posted a 123.0 offensive rating on 77.9 possessions of season pace and turned the game into a half-court dissection: 58.1% of their baskets were assisted, and their 55.3% effective field goal rate came from clean catch-and-shoot looks rather than contested creation. Fenerbahce, by contrast, finished at 98.4 ORTG with a 43.6% eFG – 9.5 points below their own season baseline and the single biggest negative deviation of the night.

    The turnover tax

Fenerbahce’s turnover rate jumped to 24.6%, +8.0 above their season level. Against a Madrid defence that was already sitting at a 98.4 defensive rating, every extra empty possession was fatal: Madrid converted those extra chances into transition and early-offence points before Fener’s half-court shell could set. The offensive glass (45.5%, +13.6) kept Fenerbahce mathematically alive, but second-chance points cannot compensate for a quarter of your possessions ending in a giveaway.

    Forrest’s on-off paradox

Trent Forrest posted a modest PIR of 6 in 17 minutes – six points on 2/2 from the field and 2/3 from the line, with 90.4% true shooting. The raw box score says bench guard. The on-off data says the opposite: Fenerbahce were +3.1 per hundred with him on the floor and -44.4 without him, a +47.5 swing. That gap is the story of Fenerbahce’s second unit. When Forrest sat, the offence lost its only pressure release valve and the bench lineups bled points in bunches.

    Lineup signal

Fenerbahce’s best five-man unit (Sanli, Larkin, Shields, Baldwin, Key) posted a +40.9 net rating in 6.4 minutes, while their worst unit sank to -94.8 in 5.2 minutes. Madrid’s best five (Abalde, Tavares, Maledon, Feliz, Okeke) touched +80.6. In a game decided by 19 points, the bench minutes were the actual margin.

    What to watch next

Fenerbahce do not need a new offence; they need a second ball-handler who can survive without Forrest on the floor. Until the bench units stop bleeding, opponents will keep loading up on the starters and forcing the second unit to create in isolation – exactly the recipe Madrid used in Round 9.
